The sacred bamboo, also known as heavenly bamboo, does not require much care as long as it is in a suitable place. However, it should be watered sufficiently without causing waterlogging and it is not very hardy.

Plant the heavenly bamboo
The unfortunately poisonous heavenly bamboo grows in the sun and in partial shade. If it gets little light, its flowering suffers. Therefore, plant it in a rather sunny place. The soil may be humic to sandy, but not too rich in lime.
The sacred bamboo does very well as a solitary plant. Give it enough space so that it can fully develop its effect. But the heavenly bamboo is also very decorative in a bucket. Unfortunately it is poisonous.
Water and fertilize the sacred bamboo
The sacred bamboo would like to be watered regularly, but also does not tolerate waterlogging. It is best to water it when the top layer of soil has dried slightly and not too much at once.
Since the heavenly bamboo does not like lime either, you should preferably use rainwater for watering, but at least use tap water that is low in lime. The fertilizer should also be as low in lime as possible. Fertilize your sacred bamboo about every two weeks from spring through fall.
The heavenly bamboo in winter
The sacred bamboo is only conditionally hardy. It tolerates frost down to about - 10 °C for a short period of time, some varieties even down to - 15 °C. Therefore, it may only overwinter outdoors in a mild region or sheltered location.
It is safer to put the heavenly bamboo in a cold house over the winter. This can be a greenhouse or an unheated conservatory, for example. This is especially true for a sacred bamboo in a bucket or planter.
The best care tips for heavenly bamboo:
- Location: sun or light shade
- sandy to humic soil
- flowers less profusely in the shade
- soil with as little lime as possible
- Water regularly as soon as the top layer of soil has dried
- Use low-lime water or rainwater
