In connection with the pruning, you have an abundance of the best plant material in your hands for propagation. Read here how cuttings and sticks can be transformed into a vital corkscrew willow in no time at all.

The corkscrew willow can be wonderfully propagated by cuttings

Instructions for the summer cuttings propagation

When the corkscrew willow is full of sap in summer, life pulsates right up to the tips of the shoots. This is the best time to grow new specimens of the picturesque ornamental shrub from cuttings. To do this, cut semi-lignified, non-flowering head shoots 20 cm long. Please place the scissors just below a leaf knot and remove all leaves in the lower half. How to proceed:

  • Medium-sized pots fill with potting soil or a mix of sand and potting soil
  • Plant a cutting with the leafless part in each
  • Pour so much that the water runs out of the bottom opening

In the partially shaded, air-flushed location, keep the substrate constantly slightly moist. Now the offshoots of the corkscrew willow are proving their remarkable growth. Under ideal conditions, the growing pots (€16.68) are fully rooted by autumn, so that the young ornamental shrubs can be planted out in beds and tubs.

Rooting in water - how it works

To experience the fascinating process of rooting up close, you can place the cut cuttings in a glass or vase with water. To prevent rot, add a small piece of charcoal. On the bright window sill, which is not in full sun, the root strands sprout quickly and are visible to everyone. With a length of 5-8 cm, pot the rooted offshoots.

Instructions for winter cuttings propagation

In contrast to cuttings, cuttings are completely woody branches. Cut these off over the winter so that there is a dormant eye at each end. To avoid confusing polarity when planting, make the bottom cut at an angle and the top cut straight.

In a sheltered spot in the bed, place two-thirds of the sticks in the loose soil and water. A layer of foliage protects the offshoots from frost and permanent moisture. Alternatively, place the branches in pots with peat sand and place them in a partially shaded, frost-free location.

tips

While an adult corkscrew willow is perfectly hardy, young plants resulting from successful propagation are not. If you plant the Salix offspring in the bed in autumn, winter protection is therefore strongly recommended.
