The easy-care pipe winches are extremely easy to cut. They can easily withstand severe pruning. Basically, you don't have to cut a pipe winch at all. However, it is worth pruning them occasionally to encourage the formation of young shoots.

When is the best time for a pruning?
The best time to prune the pipe morning glory is early spring, before the plant sprout in May. Basically, you can cut the climbing plant all year round. Only on frosty days should you not reach for the scissors.
In the first few years, pruning is usually not necessary, as the pipe vine needs some time to settle in after planting. After four to five years, however, you should cut the climbing plant regularly so that it does not spread too much and harass other plants.
Remove deadwood, stunted or diseased shoots right at the base. If you just want to shorten the tendrils, place the secateurs directly over a knot.
Thin out the pipe bindweed regularly
During their lifespan of up to 50 years, pipe vines become denser and denser because new tendrils are constantly forming. It therefore makes sense to thin out the plant regularly to make room for young shoots.
The first thinning cut is due after four or five years. Then cut out older shoots every two to three years.
You can radically shorten pipe winches
If the pipe bindweed has grown way too tall, you can always cut it back. Simply cut all shoots to the desired length.
If the pipe winch is pulled in the bucket, you should cut it so that the tendrils are not higher than the available trellis. If the shoots can no longer climb up supports, they fall down.

Pipevine is poisonous. There are fewer toxins in the shoots and leaves than in the flowers, fruits and roots, but to be on the safe side you should wear gloves when cutting the climbing plant. Do not leave the plant remains lying around, but dispose of them as soon as possible.
