Garden amaryllis trump their peers for indoor culture with their majestic habit and robust constitution. However, the tropical beauties are not completely hardy. Since the Crinum powellii increase in bloom over the years, the effort of overwintering is worthwhile. Read here how the perennial cultivation succeeds.

The amaryllis - also the garden amaryllis - has to spend the winter indoors

Minimum temperature is - 1 degree Celsius

Don't be misled by the overblown promises of the trade. The senders explicitly declare every plant that can survive down to 0 degrees Celsius as winter-hardy. In fact, the garden amaryllis can only endure light frost for a short time and finally gives up at temperatures below - 1 degree Celsius.

This is how the garden amaryllis gets through the winter healthy

The garden amaryllis only develops its true beauty over the years. After the bulb flower delighted us with 3 to 4 flowers in the first summer, well-established specimens boast up to 15 individual flowers. As if that weren't enough, a mother bulb willingly produces daughter bulbs for numerous progeny at no cost. Reason enough to accompany a hook lily through the cold season with these precautions:

  • Pull the bulbs out of the ground before the first frost
  • Now finally cut off the drawn-in foliage
  • Store in a cool, dark basement on an airy wooden shelf or in dry sand
  • Replant the overwintered bulbs in March/April of the following year

Only in wine-growing regions with mild winters is there a chance of an undamaged hibernation in the bed. In this case, cover the planting site with a high layer of foliage, which is fixed with brushwood or chicken wire (14.99€). Leave the withered leaves on the bulb until spring as a natural winter protection.

tips

All Amaryllis plants are highly toxic. These include not only classics such as the amaryllis belladonna, but also the garden amaryllis, hook lily and knight's star. The plants are permeated by toxic alkaloids, which trigger severe symptoms of poisoning when consumed, such as vomiting, cramps and shortness of breath.
