In May/June the time has come and peonies are offered by florists and decorate vases here and there. What should you consider after buying or cutting your own peonies from the garden?

Farmer's peonies are suitable for cutting in vases
Only the farmer's peonies are suitable as cut flowers. Other species quickly lose their fragrant petals after pruning. Cut off a maximum of one third of all flowers on a plant. Otherwise you rob the peony of too much strength.
How to cut them properly and when?
You should heed the following points when cutting the flowers for the vase:
- optimal time: when the buds are soft to the touch and the flower color is visible
- are the buds still green - too early (would not open)
- cut diagonally
- along with a long handle
- only cut stable stems
- Leaves should be dark green
Just before putting it in the vase
After pruning or purchasing the peonies, the lower leaves should be removed and this done:
- Shorten the stem by 5 cm - with a sharp knife
- Fill the vase with lukewarm water
- insert flowers
- Place the vase in a cool, light location that is not exposed to draughts
What other flowers do peonies harmonize with?
Peonies look best on their own in the vase. You can also combine several colors with each other. If you want to combine them with other flowers in a bouquet, these varieties are the right choice:
- freesias
- gerberas
- ranunculus
- tulips
Care of cut flowers
The care should not be neglected because of the durability. This includes trimming the stem every 2 to 3 days. To do this, take a knife and cut the stem at an angle. In addition, the water should be renewed regularly. You are also welcome to add a squeeze of lemon juice. With good care, the cut flowers can last up to 10 days!
tips
If some petals already fall off, you can take them, dry them and use them later for tea. They are edible.
