Which location has a favorable effect on growth?

Since tree peonies can live up to 60 years, the choice of location should be well thought out. These plants love warmth and grow best in sunny locations. A location in the semi-shade can also be considered if necessary. A wind-protected location is also important.

What should the earth be like?

Whether at the edge of a wood or in an open space - plant your tree peony(s) in a soil that ideally has the following characteristics:

  • depth of at least 50 cm
  • high humus content
  • good permeability
  • pH between 6 and 9
  • medium lime content
  • good ability to store water
  • ideal: sandy loamy soil

When do you plant the plants and which plant partners are suitable?

Bare root tree peonies are planted in the fall. If you want them to be well rooted until spring, August to September is perfect. But they can also be planted in October. Suitable plant neighbors include:

  • fat chicken
  • delphinium
  • daylilies
  • sword iris

When do tree peonies bloom?

Tree peonies go into bloom at a young age. Every year there are more flowers. The flowering period usually begins around mid-May. It lasts for a month, i.e. until about mid-June.

How should the planting distance be measured?

Tree peonies are not particularly competitive. Therefore, they should not be planted near spruces, yews, etc. You should keep a distance of 70 to 100 cm to other tree peonies. Each individual plant takes up about 1.5 square meters of space.

How is planting done step by step?

First, a 30 to 50 cm deep planting hole is dug and the soil in it loosened. The pruning-tolerant plant is planted with its grafting point 10 cm below the surface of the earth. Then cover with soil, tread down and water!
