Scented roses - these can be shrub roses as well as hybrid tea, rambler roses and ground cover roses. However, how do you plant them properly if you don't know how? In the following you will find the answers to all essential questions!

Like all types of roses, fragrant roses prefer a sunny location

Which location do fragrant roses need?

Scented roses are basically not planted in any other location than so-called shrub and hybrid roses. In order to be able to develop the best scent, a sunny location is the first choice. In partial shade, the flowers smell less intense.

Also, if possible, a location in an airy but covered location is preferable. Rainwater would otherwise soften the scent somewhat and damage the appearance of the flowers. For example, open layers on house walls and under eaves are well suited.

Where is the best place to plant fragrant roses?

Roses that emit a strong scent should be planted where the scent can be deeply inhaled. Seating areas such as terraces are well suited for this. Planting sites along the way, at the entrance to the house or in the foreground of the perennial bed are also advantageous.

Which substrate do fragrant roses need?

Since fragrant roses develop a deep root system, they are less suitable for pot culture. They need a deep underground of at least 50 cm. The earth should have the following characteristics:

  • nutritious
  • permeable
  • loamy or clayey
  • slightly sandy
  • slightly acidic to neutral
  • humorous

Which planting distances should be observed?

Depending on which variety you bought, you should keep a certain distance between individual roses, other plants and objects when planting. For example, if the scented rose is 80 cm wide, a planting distance of at least 40 cm should be maintained. The rule is: half the growth width.

Can you propagate fragrant roses?

Of course you can also multiply fragrant roses! But this is only allowed if the varieties are not protected. You can recognize such specimens by the ® when you buy them. Varieties that are not protected can easily be propagated using cuttings. Take the cuttings in the summer and plant them directly in a bed that you can cover, such as a garden bed. B. Cold frame.
