Rose lovers cherish and care for their treasures with the utmost care and guard them like the apple of their eye. But is all this necessary? Do shrub roses really need that much care or do you just need to pay them a visit every now and then?

How and when do you cut the shrub roses correctly?
Basically, it is not absolutely necessary to cut the shrub roses. However, pruning keeps the shrub roses vigorous and promotes flowering. It is therefore best to regularly cut off all withered flowers in summer, right down to the leaf underneath. This stimulates the formation of new flower buds.
A small pruning should then be carried out in the spring. Shrub roses are cut back by about 1/3. Also remove the following:
- old and lazy shoots
- crossing shoots
- shoots growing inwards
- frozen shoots
Are fertilizers necessary for all varieties?
Repeat-flowering varieties in particular need fertilizer in order to be able to flower throughout the summer and into the fall. Therefore, fertilize them regularly! Once-blooming shrub roses are content with a single dose of fertilizer every spring.
Here are a few pointers:
- Fertilizers: horn shavings, (32.93€) compost, liquid manure
- if necessary use long-term fertilizers
- Give long-term fertilizer from May
- Fertilize for the first time in spring, for the second time during flowering and for the third time immediately after flowering - ideal
- Stop fertilizing by the beginning of September at the latest
When should shrub roses be watered and how?
Since shrub roses form a deep taproot, they do not need constant watering. Watering is only recommended for growth and in heat and drought. Be sure to:
1. Do not water directly on the leaves (increases the risk of fungal diseases)!
2. Water preferably in the morning or evening!
3. Water older specimens less often than younger ones!
4. Use low-lime water for watering!
Which diseases are more common?
Roses are mainly attacked by fungal diseases, especially if they are in an unfavorable position. Affected shoots should be cut off and disposed of as soon as possible. The most common are powdery mildew, black spot and rose rust.
tips
Fungal diseases are promoted if the shrub rose is in a protected location! So make sure you plant in an airy location!
