Lovers of lily of the valley can hardly wait until the spring flower shows its pretty bells and fills the air with its intense fragrance. But did you know that you can prefer lily of the valley indoors? Then the flower blooms already in winter.

Lily of the valley is also suitable as a potted plant

This is how you prefer lily of the valley

  • Dig up the rhizome
  • Fill pot with soil
  • Insert the rhizome the right way round
  • cover lightly with soil
  • set up at about 20 degrees
  • keep moist but not wet

Dig the rhizome out of the garden in November. You are not allowed to remove rhizomes from the forest, this is prohibited by nature conservation.

Garden soil mixed with potting soil from the hardware store and some sand is suitable as a substrate.

The pot should have a diameter of twelve centimeters and a drainage hole at the bottom to prevent waterlogging.

Keep moist until flowering

The rhizome is only covered with a little soil in the pot. The eyes must protrude slightly from the ground.

Keep the soil moist, but avoid waterlogging as this will cause the rhizome to rot. Place the pot on a windowsill that is neither too cold nor too warm. 20 degrees is ideal.

It takes a few weeks for the leaves to appear, followed by the flowers after another two to three weeks.

Plant out after flowering or refrigerate

Flowering can be prolonged if you don't place the pot in a warm living room. When the lily of the valley has faded, you can plant the rhizome back in the garden.

If you would like to continue caring for the lily of the valley in the bucket, place it in a cool, shady location after flowering. Don't forget to water it occasionally to keep the soil from drying out.

In November, bring the pot back inside to encourage the lily of the valley again.

tips

Lily of the valley in the garden are absolutely hardy and do not need any special protection. If you grow lilies of the valley in a tub or pot on the terrace, winter protection is required, because the soil must not freeze completely. Overwinter the plant in the basement or cover the pot with bubble wrap.
