The propagation of their own plants is important to many flower lovers and is not always as easy to accomplish as with the colored nettle. You can easily cultivate the different species mixed with each other, for example together in one pot.

The colored nettle can be propagated e.g. by seeds or cuttings

Propagation by seed

The colored nettle can be propagated by sowing, but this requires a lot of patience. The seeds are often available in specialist shops in “mixed” assortments, not of the same variety or colour. It is not advisable to collect the seeds of the colored nettle yourself, because often the flower is not even allowed to bloom.

It is best to sow the colored nettle in seed pots, (16.68€) cover the pots with transparent foil and keep the substrate well moist. For germination, the seeds need a temperature of at least 20 °C, but it can also be a little warmer. The seeds should not be covered with soil or substrate, because these are light germs.

After about 14 - 21 days, the first seedlings appear, but unfortunately their final color is not yet visible. Now remove the foil, but continue to keep the soil evenly moist. Once two to three pairs of leaves have formed, two or three of you can transplant the seedlings into flower pots and after about two more pairs of leaves you will know what color your colored nettles are.

Propagation by cuttings

Propagation by cuttings is very easy with the colored nettle. Cut shoots about 10 cm long that are no longer too tender. You can also use the pinched off flowering shoots. Remove the bottom pairs of leaves, leaving only the top two. Now put these shoots in a glass with water or put them in a pot with potting soil.

Tips for propagating the coleus:

  • light germinator
  • Germination time: approx. 14 - 21 days
  • Germination temperature: at least 20 °C
  • Cut cuttings of about 10 cm in length
  • remove lower pairs of leaves
  • Root the cuttings in water or potting soil

tips

Since the colored nettle often becomes unsightly after a few years, they should start multiplying in good time. This is very easy to do with cuttings.
