Would you like to spice up your salad with edible flowers from your own garden? Then plant the very decorative and easy-care cosmea, also known as a decorative cosmos. With its distinctive blooms, it should not be missing in any summer garden.

The cosmos should be planted in a sunny spot

Plant the cosmea

In order for your Cosmea to bloom lushly as desired, it needs a lot of sun. Plant the jewelry basket in a bright place with permeable and rather poor soil. The pH value does not play an important role here. However, it should be warm. Unfortunately, the Cosmea is not hardy and does not tolerate temperatures below about 15 °C. You should therefore only plant the decorative basket in the garden after the ice saints.

Water and fertilize the cosmea

As a rule, the Cosmea does not have to be watered. If the drought persists for a long time, only water the plant moderately. Only freshly planted the Cosmea should be watered well. On the other hand, it does not need fertilizer at all, not even during the flowering period.

Cut the cosmea

In order for your Cosmea to bloom for a long time, you should regularly cut off the withered flowers. This stimulates the plant to form new buds. For a bushy growth, you can cut back your jewelry basket from time to time. But don't accidentally cut off all the flowering shoots. Incidentally, the cosmea is also an excellent cut flower for the vase.

Multiply the Cosmea

The cosmea is easy to multiply. Often she even does it herself by seeding herself. Young plants often grow where they are not wanted. You can only prevent this by preventing seed ripening and removing the seed pods in good time.

For targeted propagation, we recommend sowing from the end of February on a warm windowsill. By the time they are planted out after the ice saints, the seedlings have grown into strong plants.

The best care tips for the Cosmea:

  • easy-care
  • water moderately during prolonged drought
  • Fertilizer not required
  • Cut back occasionally for bushy growth
  • Cutting off wilted flowers encourages further budding
  • excellent cut flower

tips

If you regularly remove the withered flowers of your Cosmea and give it a location in full sun, it will bloom particularly profusely.
