Hops cannot be grown in the garden without climbing aids. The hop tendrils must be able to climb up a trellis or on taut ropes in order to reach their considerable height.

Hops get by with very simple climbing aids

It doesn't work without a climbing aid

As a climbing plant, hops form long tendrils that grow up to seven meters or even longer. Without support, the plant would take care of the ground. In nature, hops climb up trees and bushes.

In the garden you have to provide a climbing aid. You can use any trellis with narrow bars for this. If no trellis is available, hops can also be grown on taut wires.

Hop tendrils must always be guided around the climbing aid to the right. If they are placed to the left, the hops will stop growing.

tips

Hops are very decorative as a privacy screen in summer. The leaves resemble vine leaves. While the flowers are rather inconspicuous, the green-yellow cones appear in late summer and you can even harvest them.
