Hops are climbing plants that grow very quickly and can still be kept in pots. It is therefore the ideal plant for greening balconies and pergolas. The only important thing is that you have a climbing aid available around which the tendrils can wind up.

Hops are also suitable for greening the balcony, but they can become very large

Grow hops on the balcony

It is not easy to create a suitable privacy screen from plants on the balcony. Just try hops.

The climbing plant grows very quickly when given sufficient moisture and nutrients.

Unlike ivy or wine, hops do not leave traces and stains on masonry. This is an important consideration, especially for renters.

trellis on the balcony

A trellis is usually already present on the balcony - the balcony parapet. However, it is usually not high enough, but can be made higher with additional bars. You can also make a suitable climbing aid out of sturdy ropes.

Water the hops in the bucket frequently

If you grow hops in a bucket, you have to pay attention to a few things:

  • big bucket
  • good drainage
  • water frequently
  • fertilize regularly
  • if necessary support hop tendrils when climbing
  • protect from frost in winter

Hops tolerate waterlogging just as little as drought. Make sure the pot has a large drainage hole and, to be on the safe side, create drainage.

Water the hops regularly, because the plant constantly evaporates moisture through its many leaves. You also have to fertilize hops in the bucket regularly.

Provide winter protection on the balcony

Hops are absolutely hardy outdoors. The plant retracts and does not need any protection. This is different when breeding in a bucket. Here the earth freezes faster and the hops dry up.

In the fall, place the pot on a styrofoam sheet (€35.50) or other sealing material. Wrap the tub in bubble wrap and cover the top of the plant. Then the hops will survive even very cold winters on the balcony.

tips

Hops tolerate shady locations as long as they are light enough. It is therefore the ideal plant for north-facing balconies or pergolas. However, the female fruits only form if the hops receive enough sun.
