Gundermann, also called Gundelrebe, belongs to the mint family. The flower has the typical mint shape and is purple in colour. During the flowering period, the medicinal plant is a very pretty sight. The flowers are a popular bee pasture.

The flowers grow in groups of three or four from each leaf axil. They are hermaphroditic, occasionally male-sterile.

The flowering period of the ground ivy begins in April and continues into July, sometimes even longer. Outside of the flowering period, the edible ground ivy is very inconspicuous.
