Ranunculus belong to the buttercup family, are poisonous and impress with their rose-like flowers. If you want to buy them as cut flowers or admire them in bloom in the garden, you should know exactly when they are in season.

Garden buttercups bloom from mid-May

Greenhouse ranunculus - already from January

In the Netherlands, ranunculus is grown in greenhouses. Due to the permanent heat, the specimens planted there bloom as early as January. The cut flowers are packed and shipped around the world. In Germany they are then available from January to around May in stores or from florists.

The cut flowers are ideal for colorful spring bouquets. Daffodil season begins almost at the same time as ranunculus season. Both flowers together in a vase create a harmonious picture.

Garden buttercups are in season in summer

After the main cut ranunculus season is over, the garden ranunculus season begins. The flowers open around mid-May. They can be viewed for several weeks. The flowers usually fade towards the end of July.

Extend the flowering season

You can extend the flowering season of ranunculus in your garden with a few simple tricks:

  • Rinse faded flowers immediately
  • fertilize regularly (intervals of 1 week)
  • water copiously to keep the soil moist
  • Potted plants: put in the shade

Once the flowering season is over, you should gradually reduce the fertilizer application. Casting can also be omitted once. So that the tuber can prepare for the winter, the soil should now be dry sometimes. When the old stems and leaves have yellowed, they can be removed.
