Rich, bright colors adorn the balcony railing. The flowers are reminiscent of roses. But is the ranunculus that has spread here. What has to be considered when it comes to culture on the balcony?

Ranunculus prefer shady balconies

South balconies - less suitable

South-facing balconies are popular. But not with ranunculus… They don't like the summer heat as much. They prefer to thrive in shaded to shady locations. The location can therefore be an east, west or north-facing balcony.

For example, you can plant your ranunculus in front of the balcony railing. Hanging pots that can be attached to railings work well for this. Conventional balcony boxes (€109.00) are also ideal. You can also plant the ranunculus in pots or tubs and place it on the protective wall of the house, for example.

Water and fertilize plentifully

In order for the balcony flowers to live (or survive) for a long time, you should take good care of them. This includes casting at the forefront. In summer it can be necessary to water the ranunculus almost every day. The soil should be slightly moist. Second is fertilizing. A conventional liquid flower fertilizer (€1.95) is sufficient here. Fertilize the plants every 1 to 2 weeks!

Bring in for wintering in late fall

A ranunculus in a pot on the balcony would freeze to death in winter because the pot with its thin walls does not offer sufficient protection. It is therefore better to get the bulbous tubers out of the ground, clean them and store them dry.

Here are a few tips for overwintering the balcony plants:

  • choose a cool, dark and dry place
  • ideal temperature: 5 to 8 °C
  • well suited: basements, garages, attics
  • remove all plant parts above ground before overwintering
  • only bring them out again when no more night and late frosts are to be expected

Before overwintering, separate and multiply the brood tubers

Before the tubers are overwintered, it is advisable to examine them for so-called brood tubers. These form over the course of the summer and can serve to propagate the ranunculus. To do this, they simply have to be planted separately in the spring.

tips

It looks wonderful when you plant several different flowering varieties next to each other, for example in the balcony box!
