In May, inconspicuous side branches grow out of the stalks of ground elder. The flowers will soon form there. They closely resemble the flowers of the wild carrot, cow parsley and burnet. You should therefore take a closer look to be able to identify them with certainty!

Flowering time and external characteristics of the flowers

Ground elder flowers tower above the leaves. They usually form from May onwards. The flowering period then lasts until about July - more rarely until September.

The edible and sweet-tasting flowers of goutweed have these characteristics:

  • umbellifers
  • flat inflorescence
  • 12 to 25 rays
  • colored white
  • tiny individual flowers
  • without bracts
  • hermaphrodite
  • fivefold
  • Petals obcordate
  • moderate supply of nectar and pollen
  • yellow pollen

It is difficult to identify ground elder with certainty based solely on its flowers. In addition, always look at the sheets to avoid confusion!
