Whether you call it ranunculus or Kerria japonica - this plant, which grows up to 2 m tall and happily sprouts runners, is not only suitable for outdoor cultivation. It can also grow and thrive in a bucket.

The ranunculus shrub prefers to be in partial shade

How big should the bucket be?

If you bought the ranunculus bush as a young plant, you can first put it in a 10 to 15 liter container. A larger planter is only required after 2 to 3 years. Conventional potting soil is sufficient to fill the bucket. This should be permeable, but also be able to store water well.

Find a parking space

A ranunculus bush in a bucket should not be placed directly in the sun. It is difficult to ensure that the soil stays moist there. It is therefore advisable to choose a sunny location. For example, the location can be there:

  • on the balcony
  • on the terrace
  • in the area of the house entrance

In general, a ranunculus bush in a bucket is also the right choice for all those who do not want to take the risk of planting the plant where it can spread wild and who want to save themselves the work of installing a root barrier in the ground.

Water and fertilize regularly

Regular care, which includes watering and fertilizing, is essential. Otherwise, the ranunculus shrub in the bucket will quickly look old. Water it frequently so that the soil is moderately moist.

Fertilizing should not be done too often and not too heavily. At intervals of 4 weeks it is sufficient to supply this plant with new nutrients. Normal flower fertilizers (€1.95) or potted plant fertilizers in liquid form are suitable for fertilizing.

Cut and overwinter

Pruning also plays a crucial role with this container plant! Thin out the plant every year and remove the old flowers. In preparation for wintering, the shoots can be cut back by a third. The ranunculus bush overwinters in a frost-free but cool place.

tips

You are welcome to repot your ranunculus bush in spring. This saves you fertilizer and gives the plant more room to grow.
