The genus of water lilies is quite widespread in the world. You can find these plants in North America, Europe and much of Asia. The habitats and requirements of the various species are correspondingly different.

The different types of water lilies
The water lily occurs in Scandinavia, but also in mountain or bog lakes in Central Europe and even in Siberia. The yellow flowers are only 2 - 3 cm in size and have a delicate scent. The Indian water rose, which also has yellow flowers, forms flowers that are 5 - 12 cm in size. These appear in the period from May to August. Their original homeland is North America.
The best location for water lilies
Most water lilies for the home garden pond prefer a sunny and warm place. They would like to have at least five hours of sunshine a day, then they flower quite reliably, profusely and for a long time. Only a few varieties are ready for this in partial shade.
In full shade, only the yellow water lily comes into question. Incidentally, you should not confuse the water lily with the water lily, which have completely different flowers in different colors and round instead of heart-shaped leaves.
plant water lilies
You can either plant water lilies directly in the pond floor or in special plant baskets. The baskets make it easier for you to care for the water lilies later and protect the roots of the plant from being nibbled on or dug up by fish. When planting in the pond floor, however, the water lilies root deeper. So they are well protected in strong currents or frost.
Caring for water lilies properly
Water lilies are quite easy to care for if they have been chosen to suit the location. Native varieties are hardy and can remain in the pond all year round. Tropical varieties, on the other hand, need a warm and bright winter quarters because they are very sensitive to frost. An even supply of oxygen prevents the formation of algae and, together with special pond fertilizer, ensures good growth of the water lilies.
The essentials in brief:
- preferably sunny warm location
- easy-care
- tends to proliferate
- easy to share
- do not confuse it with the water lily!
