The water lily is quite robust and can cope with different water conditions. So it doesn't take it amiss when the water level changes and it also tolerates slightly flowing water. You can plant the water lily in a swimming pond or a small garden pond.

The yellow water lily also thrives in the shade

Find the right location

The Little Mummel (Nuphar pumila) prefers a water depth of about 40 to 80 cm. The Mummel (Nuphar lutea), on the other hand, feels more comfortable in deeper water. The water level here can be between one and two and a half meters. In a large pond with different zones, both plants will definitely find a suitable place.

Most water lilies like a rather sunny location, while the yellow water lily even blooms in the shade. The variety needs a lot of space for this, about 2 m² of water surface per specimen.

Is a plant basket recommended?

A plant basket (€11.99) is highly recommended for the water lily. Especially the larger varieties prefer a water depth in which it is not so easy to work. The basket makes care a lot easier, be it planting or trimming the rhizomes.

Is the water lily suitable for planting in a bucket?

The water lily can also be planted in a mini pond or a bucket. Regular pruning of the rhizomes is particularly important so that it does not overgrow the entire planter and displace other plants.

For a small container, choose a variety that will stay small and check the growth of the rhizomes at least once a year. The yellow water lily requires quite a lot of space and is better suited for a larger pond.

Can the water lily be transplanted easily?

As a robust plant, the water lily can be transplanted quite easily. However, it is not so easy to leave the proliferating rhizomes unharmed. If rhizome residues remain at the old location, a new plant can certainly grow from them. Transplanting is easiest if you have placed your water lily in a plant basket.

The most important planting tips in brief:

  • Location as sunny as possible
  • Exception: yellow water lily
  • Plant basket makes later care easier

tips

It is best to place your water lily in a plant basket. This will make it easier for you to care for them later and to transplant them if necessary.
