- The best time to plant is before they sprout in spring
The dogwood (Cornus) owes its name to the extremely hard wood, which is particularly popular for walking sticks. There are about 55 different species that are mainly found in the climatically moderate latitudes of the northern hemisphere. The shrub or small tree, also known as the horn shrub, is very robust, frugal and also absolutely hardy.

Container goods can be planted all year round
Usually the dogwood is available as already well-rooted container ware, which could in principle be planted all year round. In fact, the shrub should not necessarily be planted in the garden during the hot summer months, because at this time it needs a lot of water and has to be watered frequently. Otherwise the shrub is in danger of drying out quickly, because the roots that have not yet grown in are not able to generate sufficient water from the soil themselves. So if - for whatever reason - you have to plant a dogwood in the middle of summer, make sure you have an adequate water supply.
The best time to plant is before they sprout in spring
However, the autumn months of September to October and the early spring months before the hornbush sprout are best suited for planting. At this time, the wood needs significantly less water and is therefore less at risk of drying out. You can also plant the dogwood in the middle of winter, as long as the weather is mild and the ground is not frozen.
tips
Although the dogwood does not necessarily have to be pruned, it also tolerates a strong pruning very well. If possible, this should take place after flowering, which can be seen in most dogwood species in the months of May to June.
