The Japanese dogwood (Cornus kousa), also known as flower dogwood in this country, is a very decorative tree. The richly flowering shrub is mainly cultivated for its very showy white flowers, which can be up to ten centimeters in size. In autumn, the deciduous plant also impresses with an intense color of the leaves.

The golden mean is just right
However, the Japanese dogwood only develops its magnificent flowers and autumnal foliage color in a suitable location. In contrast to native dogwood species, the exotic species attaches great importance to a balanced location with plenty of light, but not too much sunlight. A place in the light semi-shade or in the sun is perfect for the Japanese dogwood, as long as it does not have to be in the hottest midday sun.
Soil should be rich in nutrients and well drained
Choose a loose, very permeable, nutrient-rich and humus-rich soil for this dogwood. This should also contain as little lime as possible, which is why the plant is best watered with very soft water (e.g. rainwater).
tips
The Japanese dogwood harmonises wonderfully with vigorously flowering perennials such as delphiniums, day lilies or coneflowers.
