The ball trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides), a variant of the trumpet tree, impresses with its large and heart-shaped leaves that sprout very late. This trumpet tree species can only be propagated by grafting and has a much slower growth rate than conventional representatives of the genus Catalpa. They are therefore also suitable for smaller gardens or for keeping in tubs.

The ball trumpet tree grows very slowly

Average growth between 20 and 30 centimeters per year

While normal trumpet trees can grow up to 15 meters high and at least as wide under optimal conditions, the ball trumpet tree - depending on the variety - only reaches a height of up to four to six meters. It can also become just as wide, with the crown naturally retaining a spherical shape at least in the first few years and only later growing in width. On average, the ball trumpet tree achieves growth of between 20 and 30 centimeters per year, and its growth can be limited very well by pruning measures.

tips

A particularly small variety is "Nana", which only grows up to five meters high and 3.5 meters wide.
