As with all magnolias, the tulip magnolia (Magnolia soulangeana) grows very slowly. On the other hand, the primeval-looking tree can assume very considerable proportions in old age, which is why this type of magnolia is not suitable for small gardens or narrow locations - especially since magnolias cannot be limited in their growth by severe pruning, as these trees are very sensitive to pruning.

Tulip magnolia grows between 30 and 60 centimeters per year
On average, a tulip magnolia grows between 30 and 60 centimeters a year, although such increases can of course only be achieved in appropriate locations with plenty of light and warmth and a suitable - lime-free! - Ground reached. Young tulip magnolias generally grow more slowly, while older ones can certainly increase in height and width more quickly. At the age of ten, this species of magnolia is between 300 and 500 centimeters high and 250 to 350 centimeters wide under optimal conditions. At the age of about 50 years, the same tree can already be about eight to ten meters wide.
tips
For good growth, you can plant the tulip magnolia in rhododendron soil and regularly supply it with a suitable, lime-free fertilizer.
