Beech trees are native trees and are well adapted to cool climates. The biggest problem in winter is drought. Younger trees should therefore be protected with a layer of mulch and watered if necessary.

Not all beeches lose their leaves in autumn

Beeches are hardy

Beeches have no problem with low temperatures. Older trees can even withstand temperatures down to minus 30 degrees without any problems. That is why well-established beeches do not need winter protection.

It is important that you do not fertilize the trees after August and, if possible, do not prune them either. This would stimulate new growth. However, the new branches are not hardy.

Protect beech from drying out in winter

A beech must always be slightly damp. In very dry winters, the roots dry out and the tree dies. However, this usually only happens with young trees whose root system is not yet so pronounced.

In the first few years you should therefore protect the soil under the tree with a layer of mulch.

Beech trunks have a very thin bark, which can suffer from sunburn when exposed to strong sunlight - even in winter. You can protect young beeches with sackcloth or brushwood.

That is why a mulch layer makes sense in winter

A mulch layer off

  • leaves
  • lawn clippings
  • compost
  • straw

always makes sense for beeches in winter. These organic materials protect the soil from drying out and prevent weeds from emerging. In addition, the blanket decomposes and releases valuable nutrients, saving you the trouble of fertilizing.

With beech species that lose their leaves in autumn, you should simply leave the leaves as a natural protection in winter.

Overwinter bonsai trees frost-free

If you grow a beech tree as a bonsai in a pot, you must keep it as cool but frost-free as possible over the winter. A cool garden shed is well suited. (24.90 €)

You can also take the bonsai out of the pot and plant it directly outdoors in October. The tree is then dug up again in spring and placed in the bowl.

tips

The fruits of the beech have to go through a cold phase in winter. Otherwise the seeds will not germinate. If you want to propagate a beech from beechnuts yourself, you can put the fruit in the refrigerator for some time.
