When fertilizing beech, the right amount plays a role. Too much fertilizer is harmful. As a rule, you do not need to fertilize older beeches because they take care of themselves through their branched root system. Regular application of fertilizer supports the growth of young beeches. How to fertilize properly.

Young beeches can be encouraged to grow with regular fertilizer application

When is a beech fertilized?

It is quite sufficient if you fertilize only a young beech regularly. For older trees it is sufficient if you sprinkle some mature compost around the tree at the beginning of the year.

The best basis for growth is provided by mixing the soil with compost and/or horn shavings (€32.93) before planting the beech. As a result, the tree is supplied with sufficient nutrients for a longer period of time.

A beech is only fertilized in the period from March to the beginning of August. Subsequent fertilizer applications stimulate the growth of new shoots. These no longer harden before winter and freeze to death.

Which fertilizer is recommended?

  • long-term fertilizer
  • liquid fertilizer
  • compost
  • leaves

If you use long-term fertilizers, it is sufficient to fertilize the beech at the beginning of the year. Fertilizers that consist mainly of organic materials are favorable.

Liquid fertilizer must be applied more frequently. Follow the instructions on the packaging.

However, the best fertilizer is one that you produce yourself in the garden, such as compost, lawn clippings or leaves. Distribute these materials around the beech. They decompose and thereby release nutrients.

What nutrients is the soil lacking?

If the beeches are ailing or if they are only growing very slowly, you should have the soil examined. In the laboratory it can be determined which nutrients are missing and should be supplied via fertilizer.

Leave beech leaves

A very simple way to fertilize a beech is to leave the foliage alone. This saves you a lot of work and the dried leaves are good soil protection for the beech.

However, you may only leave foliage that is free of diseases and pests. You must remove diseased leaves and dispose of them in the household waste.

tips

When feeding a beech tree with store-bought fertilizer, be careful not to sprinkle or water the fertilizer on either the leaves or the trunk. There is a risk that the affected parts of the tree will “burn”.
