In spring, it is one of THE flowering shrubs that you cannot pass without looking. But what about in summer? Does the snow forsythia then need special care?

The snow forsythia must be watered regularly in summer

Summer time - fruits and seeds ripen

While the snow forsythia stays in the background in summer and is hardly noticeable, it secretly develops its nutlets. These are small, rounded, broadly winged and brown in colour. So they are not very spectacular. But they are used for sowing. If you want to grow snow forsythia from seeds, you can collect the nuts in June/July.

Ideal time for propagation

Sowing is not the only thing that needs to be done in summer. Likewise, the snow forsythia can be propagated by means of sinkers or cuttings. How to proceed with the cuttings propagation:

  • from June to September
  • Cut off shoots that are 10 to 15 cm long (e.g. as part of a pruning)
  • remove lower leaves
  • put in pots with potting soil
  • keep moist and cover if necessary

At temperatures between 20 and 25 °C (room temperature), the cuttings usually root quickly. It is best if you place the cuttings in a shady but warm place until they have rooted, e.g. B. in the living room or on the balcony. They are only planted out in the spring of the following year.

Improve growth - cut snow forsythia

The snow forsythia looks densely branched to sparse, partly overhanging and rather inconspicuous in summer. If they don't like you the way they are, now is the time to trim or shape them. You should never make the cut until autumn! Otherwise, cut off the new flower buds.

Don't forget to fertilize and water!

Snow forsythia needs a lot of water in summer. If there is no rain, drought and heat prevail, you should therefore provide your snow forsythia with water. In addition, you can fertilize the plant. Both watering and fertilizing are important to allow plenty of flower buds to form.

tips

If you want to grow snow forythia from seeds, you should use the fresh seeds in summer. They are the most germinable!
