The flowering period of the red beech is relatively short. The flowers are very inconspicuous and can only be seen if the gardener looks closely. Beech trees only bloom very little in some years, but in abundance in others.

European beeches do not flower for the first time until they are 15 years old at the earliest

The flowering time of the red beech is in spring

European beeches begin to bloom at the end of April. They are monoecious, meaning they have male and female flowers on one tree. The flowering period lasts only a few weeks and is over by the end of May at the latest.

It takes many years for a copper beech to bloom for the first time. The first inflorescences do not form until the age of 15 to 20 years.

Fruits emerge from the flowers even later. European beeches become mature at around 40 years of age and only then develop germinable fruits, the slightly poisonous beechnuts.

tips

European beeches are not grown in parks and gardens because of their flowers, but because of their rapid growth and their leaves. Especially the autumn leaves offer a very decorative sight.
