In principle, the virgin vine (Parthenocissus), also known as "wild wine" or "wall wine", can be cultivated very well in a plant pot or tub, provided you follow certain planting and care instructions.

Keeping the popular climbing plant in this way is particularly suitable for greening terraces and balconies, although certain restrictions must be observed on the latter in particular: Virginia creeper can grow very high and wide even in a bucket, so it needs a lot of space. In addition, the self-climber leaves unsightly stains on the ground that are difficult to remove due to its adhesive feet. For these reasons, growing Virginia creepers (and other vines, too) on apartment balconies may be prohibited-though you may be able to allow the plant to climb up a trellis instead of a wall.

If you want to plant Virginia creeper in a bucket, you should first choose a sufficiently large planter. It makes sense to use a slightly smaller pot (ideally 30 x 30 centimeters) for a young plant and to exchange it for a slightly larger one every two to three years. Fresh substrate should always be filled in when repotting, so that there is no compaction and thus a poorer supply of nutrients and water.

Pay attention to proper drainage

A mixture of compost, sand and horn shavings (€32.93) is suitable as a plant substrate, although you can also add two or three handfuls of clay granules to improve permeability. In general, the well-being of the plant absolutely depends on the moisture in the pot: Virginia creeper prefers a slightly damp substrate, but does not tolerate wet feet. Therefore, choose a bucket with drainage holes and do not place it directly on a saucer. Instead, the pot is placed on wooden blocks so that excess water can drain away unhindered.

There is also a lot to consider when it comes to care: Wild wine in the bucket should be watered regularly and given a liquid complete fertilizer at least every two to three weeks. The plant has a high nutrient requirement, which is why this point in particular should not be neglected. In winter, the roots should be protected from cold and moisture.
