Hornbeams are not grown in the garden for their flowers, but for their foliage. It changes color several times a year. The flowering time only plays a role in solitary trees that are not pruned or not pruned very often.

The flowering period of the hornbeam begins in May and ends in early June. After very mild winters, flowering can begin earlier.
The first flowering period occurs after about 20 years. It takes another 10 to 20 years for the flowers to develop into fruit. A hornbeam is only fertile at the age of 40.

Since hornbeams are not beeches but a birch family, allergy sufferers should not keep hornbeams as a single tree in the garden. If the hornbeam is cared for as a hedge, few flowers form because the hedge is cut frequently. There is therefore hardly any pollution from pollen.
