Fire beans are almost predestined as a privacy screen! They can climb up to 7 m and wrap themselves around the object offered to them. Its foliage forms densely and thus keeps unwelcome glances away from neighbors and the like.

2 weeks after sowing (you can bring them forward from the end of March), runner beans can already be 30 cm tall. After 5 weeks, the plants are often already 2 meters high! With this height alone, they act as privacy screens.
Climbing aid is absolutely necessary
In order to really shoot up, fire beans need objects to hold on to. Their shoots wind around it and thus climb to dizzying heights. If the fire beans have no climbing object available, they grow along the ground.
Suitable climbing objects for fire beans
When planting, you should equip your fire beans with a climbing aid so as not to injure the plants later. Which climbing aids are suitable?

- Stable poles (e.g. set up in a pyramid)
For tubs that are on the balcony or terrace, for example, you can use a trellis from the hardware store or garden center. It is ideal if the column narrows towards the top. It is anchored deep in the bucket.
How big should the planting distance be?
In order to get a proper privacy screen, you should not plant the plants too far apart in the ground. A minimum distance of 20 cm is required. However, it should not be more than 40 cm. The privacy screen becomes even more effective if you sow 3 to 5 beans per planting hole!
