The bushy or climbing species of wax flowers originally come from tropical latitudes. That is why the Hoya species, which are also marketed as porcelain flowers, are usually cultivated as indoor plants and cannot be overwintered in the garden.

The porcelain flower also needs warmth in winter

The right conditions for overwintering the wax flower

The following types of wax flower are primarily sold in specialist shops:

  • Hoya australis
  • Hoya carnosa
  • Hoya bella

While the first two species are optimally overwintered at temperatures of around 15 degrees Celsius during the "rest period", the latter likes it a little warmer at around 18 degrees Celsius. Therefore, most living spaces are not very suitable as winter quarters. Better are the slightly cooler temperatures in a bright stairwell or storage room, where the plants can still be watered occasionally and do not get a cold draft.

Maintenance measures during the winter time

The winter time is a kind of resting phase for the wax flower. Therefore, during this time it should only be watered sparingly and if possible not fertilized.

tips

Spring is the best time to repot and propagate wax flowers.
