A pretty filler, that's it, the stone herb. It blooms all summer long if you let it and cut off its old flowers regularly. You can multiply it easily and quickly by sowing!

The seeds for Alyssum can also be collected after flowering

Indoors from March, outdoors from April

You can start sowing in a targeted manner as early as March. Then the seeds can be grown at home. The young plants should not be planted before mid-May. If you shy away from the pre-culture, you can alternatively start direct sowing outdoors from April.

Buy the seeds or harvest them yourself

Let's be honest: anyone can buy the Alyssum seeds. It is much more fun to harvest the seeds from your own existing plants. The prerequisite for this is that you harvest the seeds in late summer or autumn. They are very fine, small and roundish-flat. You can also cut off the seeds and take the seeds out at home.

Start sowing

Fill small pots or a bowl with seed compost. You should plan several seeds per pot. That is how it goes:

  • Cover seeds lightly with soil and press down
  • spray with an atomizer
  • in a bright place e.g. B. on the window sill in the living room

Germination starts at 15 °C (ideally 18 to 20 °C). You are also welcome to place the seed pots on the balcony or terrace, as long as it is frost-free there. Attention: Remember to check daily whether the substrate is damp.

The seeds will germinate after 7 to 10 days. With good care, the young plants can later be pricked out. But not too much of a good thing! If several plants stand together in one place, denser clumps form.

Plant out in a sunny spot

In the case of pre-cultivation, the stonewort plants are planted in a sunny location after the ice saints. Partially shaded locations are also suitable if necessary. It is important that the soil is permeable and humus.

tips

Alyssum often self-seeds (self-seeding). All you have to do is cut off all the dead flowers so the seeds can form.
