If you don't keep the mussel flowers in an aquarium, but outside in a garden pond, for example, you should hibernate them, otherwise they won't survive the winter. And you want to be able to enjoy this pond plant for a long time, right?

In a vessel or in the aquarium
Since the mussel flower, a plant from the tropics, is extremely sensitive to frost, you should hibernate it before the first frost sets in - preferably from the end of September. To do this, the plant is fished out of the garden pond with a net.
Both a glass vessel with a thick layer of clay and an aquarium can be used for hibernation. The following aspects are important:
- bright
- between 15 and 26 °C warm
- very damp or wet
- in the aquarium: pH between 6.5 and 7.2
- clear regularly
- release again in spring
tips
Overwintering in the aquarium is quite useful. The mussel flower counteracts the formation of algae.
