In summer it shows its flowering side and the rest of the time it trumps with its colorful leaves. The purple bells just look fantastic. But only if it is in the right place.

Coral bells need sun to thrive

From full sun to partial shade

Deep shadow is totally unsuitable for all purplebells. The low incidence of light leads to sparse growth and a loss of flowers. Therefore:

  • yellow-leaved varieties: semi-shade
  • orange-leaved varieties: semi-shade
  • red-leaved varieties: (full) sun
  • other varieties: partial shade
  • the location can be under the crown of trees

Furthermore, you should - in order to keep the later care low - make sure to plant the purple bells in a permeable, nutrient-rich and slightly acidic soil.

tips

Purple bells placed in direct sun need extra attention to soil moisture levels. It is best to mulch them in the first place.
