While many shrub daisies are hardy, other types of daisies are more sensitive to frost. If you want to overwinter them, you shouldn't forget to cut them back beforehand - or only afterwards?

Before the onset of winter, hardy daisies should be cut back to the ground

Cut back to the ground in autumn

Before you quarter your daisies to overwinter, it is advisable to shorten the shoots to just above the ground. The old flowers or seeds should also be removed. If necessary, a corrective cut can be made in the spring.

Shrub daisies: only cut something in the spring

However, this does not apply to shrub daisies. It is better for them:

  • not to cut them in the fall
  • this avoids excessive drying
  • only remove old leaves and flowers
  • only cut back by a third in spring
  • When wintering outdoors: As a precaution, wrap the shoots in fleece in winter

tips

Marguerite trunks should be shortened by a third in autumn. A complete pruning is not recommended.
