Petunias originally come from South America and thank you for planting in a location with as much sun as possible with a lush and long-lasting bloom. However, compared to other flowering plants, petunias require comparatively much attention when caring for them.

Petunias are very thirsty flowers

The water requirements of petunias

The relatively high water requirement of petunias should not lead to excessive watering, as they can react to waterlogging of the roots with deficiency symptoms that resemble illnesses. This can be prevented if the balcony boxes (€109.00) are provided with appropriate drainage holes and a drainage layer of gravel. In a sufficiently permeable substrate, however, it can be advisable to water the plants daily in midsummer with larger specimens or trailing petunias as soon as the dry soil easily separates from the balcony box wall.

How to properly water petunias

The high water requirement of petunias is explained not least by the fact that they should preferably be in a covered location due to their peculiarities. When watering, the following factors should be considered:

  • Use tap water that is as soft as possible
  • do not water at midday, but rather in the morning and evening
  • do not pour from above, but close to the roots

tips

While some plant species can be happy about being rinsed off with a garden hose or watering can, this should not be done with petunias due to the risk of powdery mildew and other diseases.
