The miracle tree trumps in this country with its exotic appearance. As an ornamental plant, it is not only easy to plant, but also easy to care for and unattractive to pathogens. Which varieties are recommended?
The 'Sanguineus' variety inspires with its red veins'Sanguineus': Red as far as the eye can see
This variety comes from Zanzibar. It reaches a height of up to 2 m and is therefore perfect as a privacy screen in the garden. In order for it to reach this size, it is necessary to sow it early in the year (ideally in January). The following are their salient characteristics:
- green leaves
- dark red leaf veins
- blood red stem
- dark red stems
- crimson fruits
'Carmencita': The Giant
'Carmencita' is a giant. This variety can grow up to 3 m tall. It was specially bred as an ornamental plant for local gardens and surprises with its intense colors.
The foliage is bronze, brown-red to red in colour. It shines conspicuously and the luster appears metallic. The flowers appear from August to October, and their red color immediately catches the eye. Furthermore, the fruits and seed pods are dipped in a fiery red color.
'Impala': Dwarf variety with early flowering
Would you rather be looking for a variety for a pot or tub? Then you might be spot on with 'Impala'. This variety is rather short in stature. However, it is no less poisonous than the other varieties. It reaches a maximum height of 120 cm. They flower very early and their leaves are tinted dark red to purple.
Gibsonnii Mirabilis: Dwarf variety with dark red foliage
Gibsonnii Mirabilis is also short in stature. A dwarf among the miracle trees… Just like 'Impala', this variety presents itself with dark red hues. The leaves, flowers and fruits are reddish in colour. All in all: recommended.
Zansibariensis: The variety with large, white-veined leaves
This variety is also worth seeding. It represents the classic castor bean plant. Its foliage is remarkably large. The color of the leaves is green and the white leaf veins create a nice contrast.

Another, but less well-known dwarf variety, which is ideal for perennial tub culture, for example in the winter garden, is 'Apache'. It only grows 1 m high.
