Castor bean can also be overwintered. As a rule, however, it is cultivated annually in this country and has to be sown again every year. Growing this poisonous plant is easy once you know how to do it…

The right time for the cultivation
It is ideal to pull the seeds as early as possible. If they are already sown in January, you will get large castor bean plants with considerable dimensions and thus more flowers and fruits by summer. These fast-growing plants can be sown by July at the latest. However, sowing after May is not advisable.
Prepare the seeds for sowing
Before you sow the seeds, which you can either harvest from your own plants in the fall or buy, in the spring, you can shorten the germination time by soaking the seeds in warm water for about 24 hours. They have a hard seed coat that softens when exposed to water.
Sow, water and wait…
The seeds are planted in the ground. They are dark germs. The substrate should now be kept moderately moist for the next few days. In a warm place, the seeds will germinate within a few days. A bright place is then the top priority.
Plant out or repot the young plants
This is how it goes on:
- Plant out from May (sensitive to frost)
- choose a sunny and sheltered location
- Soil should be rich in nutrients and permeable
- Mix the soil with compost, stable manure or horn shavings (32.93€).
- alternatively grow in pots and later tubs (choose short-growing varieties)
The care in the first few weeks
In the near future it is important that you water your castor bean plants regularly. The soil should not dry out. In addition, the miracle tree needs a lot of nutrients. Fertilize every 1 to 2 weeks for a tub culture. Further care is not necessary.
tips
When direct sowing - less recommended - you should cover the young plants in the first few weeks at night, for example with clay pots. Snails particularly like to eat young castor bean plants…
