Hussar buttons have only been drawn in Europe for around 200 years. Because they stay very small, they are also known as miniature sunflowers. Just like the large sunflower, the hussar's button or hussar's head is not hardy and must be resown every year.

Hussar buttons don't tolerate a bit of frost

Hussar heads are grown once a year

Hussar's Button is a non-toxic annual that is not hardy at all. At the first frost it freezes and dies.

Even if you brought the Husarenköpfchen into the house before the frost in order to overwinter it there, it is not possible to keep it for several years.

When the seeds ripen in autumn, the hussar button is used up.

The hussar button does not tolerate frost

The Husarenköpfchen does not tolerate frost at all. That is why you may only put the bowls or balcony boxes (€109.00) outside in the spring when it is guaranteed that no more frosts are to be expected.

Wait until after the ice saints to move onto the balcony or terrace. Then the probability of night frosts occurring again is very low. Alternatively, you can place the planters with the hussar button on the balcony during the day and bring them into the house at night.

If the hussar's knobs are to grow in the rock garden or flower bed, do not plant them out before the end of May. Only if you live in an area with very mild temperatures should you think about planting out.

Sow again instead of overwintering

If you want to decorate the balcony and terrace with the grateful summer bloomers every year, you have to buy new plants from the dealer in the spring.

You can also multiply hussar buttonlets yourself if you collect seeds from the faded flowers in autumn. Seeds for sowing in spring are commercially available.

Multiply Hussar button yourself

  • Collect seeds in autumn
  • Sow in seed trays in spring
  • light germinator!
  • prick
  • plant out after the ice saints

Hussar head can be sown from February. For this you need a warm place in a bright place, for example a window.

tips

Hussar heads are at home in Central America. They grow there at altitudes of 1,000 meters. Since they spread widely in the corn fields, they are considered weeds in their homeland that must be controlled.
