What is the difference between real and false jasmine?

The biggest difference is that real jasmine is not hardy, while false jasmine, actually a mock orange tree, also withstands low temperatures well.

Where does real jasmine come from?

Real jasmine is originally native to Turkey. The name means "fragrant oil" and is often used as a girl's name in Arabic countries.

Jasmine has been cultivated in the Mediterranean region since the 16th century. There it can be kept outdoors all year round.

Is jasmine planted in a bucket or outdoors?

Real jasmine must be overwintered in the house in this country. If you plant it directly in the garden, you have to dig it up in autumn and put it in a bucket.

It is easier to grow it straight away in a pot or to care for it as a houseplant in the flower window. Jasmine also cuts a fine figure as a bonsai in a planter.

Which location is optimal?

  • Sunny to full sun location
  • Avoid shaded areas
  • sheltered from the wind
  • not too wet
  • loose, permeable soil

Jasmin loves it warm and sunny. The shrub thrives even in full sun. Shade, on the other hand, does not tolerate jasmine.

If you keep jasmine as a houseplant, you should protect it from direct midday sun to avoid sunburn on the leaves.

What must the plant substrate be like?

Normal, slightly nutritious garden soil will do. It must be as loose as possible, because waterlogging causes the roots to rot.

When planting in a pot, you should therefore loosen the soil with sand, pebbles or expanded clay (€19.73).

When is the best planting time?

Since you have to overwinter jasmine indoors anyway, you can plant it throughout the gardening season. It grows best in spring. If possible, you should therefore plant it in March or April.

Dig a hole big enough for the root ball and don't trample the soil too hard. Plant jasmine in a pot like any other houseplant.

Does Jasmine need a climbing aid?

Most jasmines are climbing plants that either climb up a trellis by themselves or are tied to a trellis.

Use the climbing aid immediately. Later you would damage the roots of the jasmine.

When is jasmine flowering?

Most jasmine species bloom from June to September. Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) flowers from December to March.

In winter, jasmine needs a longer cold period. It must therefore be overwintered at around ten degrees. If the temperatures are higher during the winter break, the jasmine will not bloom.

Can tea or perfume be made from the jasmine?

Only certain types of jasmine are suitable for the extraction of scented oils. This also applies to the popular jasmine tea. Since the plant is poisonous, it is better not to make your own tea.

To make oil for perfumes, the flowers are squeezed. However, such quantities of flowers are required for this that keeping just a few indoor or potted plants is not sufficient.

How is jasmine propagated?

Propagate jasmine by cuttings. By summer, cut semi-woody shoots about 10 to 15 centimeters long. Remove the bottom leaves and cut the top leaves in half.

Stick the cuttings into prepared plant pots and cover them with a plastic bag. It takes a few months for the cuttings to root. They can usually be transplanted the following spring.

Can you create a hedge with jasmine?

Since real jasmine is not hardy, it is not suitable for planting as a hedge. Of course you can create a summer privacy screen by placing several tubs of jasmine next to each other.

The hardy false jasmine is suitable for planting hedges. It is often used for loose hedges, but does not form a privacy screen in winter because it is summer green and sheds its leaves in autumn.

Is jasmine poisonous?

Real jasmine is poisonous. It contains many essential oils that can cause inflammation and skin irritation even if they come into contact with the skin. Therefore always wear gloves when cutting.

In households with children and animals, you should better avoid real jasmine, because swallowing it can cause serious poisoning.
