Whether an Abelia grandiflora is hardy enough to be grown outdoors depends on the variety. If you are not sure whether your shrub will survive sub-zero temperatures, it is better to take care of it in a bucket.

Most varieties of Abelia grandiflora are not hardy

Largely hardy variety of Abelia grandiflora

In the garden trade in Germany, there are mainly three varieties:

  • "Prostratra" white flowers
  • 'Kaleidoscope', white flowers
  • 'Francis Mason', pink flowers

If you want to keep the Abelia grandiflora outdoors, you should choose "Francis Mason", because this variety is largely hardy and can withstand temperatures down to minus 13 degrees. However, it cannot do without winter protection in rough locations.

"Prostratra" and "Kaleidoscope" are not hardy and should therefore be grown in tubs. Then they can spend the winter in the cool conservatory or, well wrapped up, on the terrace.

How to protect the bushes in winter

For hardy Abelia grandiflora, look for a location that is as sheltered as possible in the garden. In front of a wall or in areas with a relatively mild climate also as a hedge, these varieties survive the winter unscathed.

In harsher locations, spread a thick layer of compost or leaf mulch under the shrubs. Cover the above-ground branches with fleece or reed mats.

If the winter is very dry, you should give some water on frost-free days so that the shrub does not dry out.

Overwinter non-hardy Abelia grandiflora in tubs

Abelia grandiflora overwinters best in a bucket in a cool greenhouse or conservatory at temperatures between 5 and 12 degrees.

The plants must be watered regularly. You must not fertilize Abelia grandiflora in winter quarters.

Well wrapped up, Abelia grandiflora survives the winter in a bucket in a sheltered corner on the terrace. Place the pot on a styrofoam plate (€35.50) to protect it from the cold from below. Cover the bucket and plant with fleece or foil. On frost-free days, pour some water and open the wrapper regularly to keep the shrub from rotting.

tips

Abelia grandiflora flowers from June to October. During this time, depending on the species, it develops funnel-shaped white or pink flowers that give off a wonderful scent.
