Meadowfoam contains bitter substances, essential oils, vitamin C and mustard oil glycosides. These have a stimulating effect on the metabolism and promote digestion, but also purify the blood, are antibacterial and expectorant. Meadow smock can have a soothing effect on a variety of ailments. It is used against rheumatism, spring tiredness and pain as well as for diabetes, bronchitis, skin problems and abdominal pain.
The taste of meadowfoam is slightly spicy, similar to cress, which is due to the mustard oil glycosides. During flowering, the taste of the leaves becomes slightly bitter. The young leaves taste good in salads or soups or on a sandwich.
