The Alstroemeria is not exactly easy to care for, but it is definitely worth the effort. A well-chosen location, regular watering and fertilizing, much more is not necessary for you to be able to enjoy the exotic flowers, which can be up to 5 cm in size.

Lilies thrive best in a sunny spot

The ideal location and the best soil

The Inca lily loves a sunny and warm location, but doesn't particularly like the blazing midday sun. It should be protected from this as well as from too much and especially cold wind. After all, it is native to subtropical areas and only partially hardy. It also makes some demands on the soil. It should be humic and nutritious, but also permeable and as low in lime as possible.

Plant the Lilies

The planting hole should be about twice as deep as the root bulbs are wide. Put some well-rotted compost in the hole and water the plants well. Have patience with your perennials. Freshly planted Alstroemeria only bloom after a few years. The fleshy roots are quite delicate. Make sure you provide your alkali lily with enough water and nutrients.

The propagation of the alkali

The Alstroemeria can be propagated by seed or root division. If you have decided to divide an older plant, dig it up in the spring. Use a sharp spade or an ax to break up the roots into several roughly equal pieces and immediately plant them back in the ground.

If you want to sow Alstroemerias, use seeds that are as fresh as possible. This applies to the seeds of your own plants as well as to those bought from specialist shops or the Internet. Press the seeds into a shallow seed tray with a nutrient-rich substrate and cover with perforated foil.

Place the container in a light and warm place and keep the substrate evenly moist. After a few weeks, the first seedlings will appear. These delicate plants should only be pricked out when they are 7 - 8 cm tall.

The essentials in brief:

  • sunny warm location
  • avoid blazing midday sun
  • plant sheltered from the wind
  • humus rich soil
  • permeable lime-poor soil

tips

Plant your lily in a sunny and wind-protected place, then it will bloom profusely.
