The lily is not particularly suitable for a natural garden, it is too exotic for that. It likes a warm, wind-protected location that can be quite sunny. However, they do not particularly like the blazing midday sun. Plant the root bulbs about twice as deep as their diameter and not too close together. A lime-poor, permeable and nutrient-rich soil is well suited for alkalis.

Water and fertilize the alkali lily

The alkali lily needs water and fertilizer regularly, but under no circumstances should waterlogging occur. Adapt your watering behavior to the weather and make sure that the soil does not dry out. About every 14 days add some liquid fertilizer to the irrigation water.

Propagating the Alstroemeria

You can propagate the Alstroemeria by root division or by sowing. However, both methods require some patience. It is best to divide the roots in early spring, before the lilies sprout.

Seed germination is very limited, so only use fresh seeds. You can collect these from your own plants or buy them from specialist retailers. Cultivation in a container on the windowsill or in a warm greenhouse is recommended, as the seeds need light and heat to germinate.

The Lilies in winter

The Alstroemeria is only conditionally hardy, it cannot withstand severe frost for a long period of time. An exception are special hybrids, they were bred for winter hardiness. Young plants in particular need good winter protection. For short periods of frost, a thick layer of leaves or straw is often sufficient. In a cold area, it is better to overwinter your alkali in a greenhouse or other room at around 12 - 15 °C.
