Such an evergreen snowball as Viburnum tinus is of outstanding value. It requires little care, is largely uninteresting to pests, and flowers at an unusual time. But when is that exactly?

The Viburnum tinus flowers in winter

Winter time is flowering time

This evergreen plant, which is considered poisonous mainly because of its stone cores, usually blooms in this country after its winter dormancy. This is the case between January and April. The variety and the respective ambient temperature are decisive for the flowering time.

Here are the characteristics of the flowers:

  • strong but pleasantly scented
  • hermaphrodite
  • fivefold
  • bright white to pink
  • 4 to 9 cm wide umbelliferous flowers
  • There are also varieties like 'Little Bognor' that bloom from August
  • Blossoms in severe frost protect z. B. with fleece

tips

Be sure to overwinter your Mediterranean snowball properly. Otherwise the shoots will freeze and the flowers will not appear in spring.
