The stonecrop, also known as sedum or stonecrop, not only thrives in the garden and on the balcony, but is also very suitable as a houseplant. In this article you will find numerous tips and hints for successfully keeping sedum hens indoors.

location and substrate

Above all, it is important to have a bright, preferably sunny location where the plant can enjoy full sun mainly in the mornings and evenings. Shading only makes sense over lunchtime. Succulent soil is suitable as a substrate, after all the sedum plant belongs to the thick-leaf plants.

Caring for sedum: watering, fertilizing, cutting

Since the sedum plant can store water in its leaves, it tolerates dry periods very well. The plant is also very sensitive to high levels of moisture, which is why you should water it regularly but only slightly during the growing season. It is enough to slightly moisten the substrate. Also during the growing season, you should provide your pot-grown sedum hens with a liquid cactus fertilizer about every eight weeks. In the winter break is not fertilized. In the spring you can cut back dried or unattractive shoots to 2/3 of their length, the plant will then sprout again.

Overwinter fat hen in the apartment

During the growth period, the sedum feels at home in a sunny and warm location, but in winter it needs a resting phase of three months. This is best spent at temperatures between five and ten degrees Celsius, with you only rarely (and little!) watering and not fertilizing at all.

tips

Instead of indoors, you can also cultivate Sedum on the balcony all year round.
