The banana tree also survives Central European winters without any obstacles. However, hobby gardeners can only do this if the basic needs of the magnificent plant are observed. In any case, the hibernation has a very positive effect on the overall development.

Three different ways
All banana trees enjoy a winter break indoors or in the basement. The following types are distinguished:
- hardy
- warm wintering
- cool hibernation (in the dark)
It is interesting to know that the banana plant loses its leaves in winter. This cannot be prevented. However, this phenomenon has no negative impact on the banana.
Cellar wintering
For this variant, it is advisable to take the entire rhizomes (plant with root) out of the planter. As soon as the night-time temperatures drop below 5 degrees Celsius, the right time has come.
A soft surface is suitable for the winter quarters. The banana plant is placed on it and then covered with a damp cloth.
This substance must be kept moist throughout the winter dormancy period. As soon as nightly frosts are no longer to be expected in late spring, the banana can once again enjoy being outdoors.
Apartment hibernation
Banana trees feel most comfortable in rooms with temperatures above 18 degrees Celsius. An ideal location is near the window.
Since the plants are dormant in winter, they require very little water. As soon as the soil begins to loosen from the edge of the pot, the roots need moist supplies again. In addition, these bananas must be checked regularly for sensory mites.
tips
In principle, even hardy plants in Germany should not overwinter outdoors. Wintertime is far too cold and long for this species.
