The hosta likes to stay in the shade. Nevertheless, it does not lead a shadowy existence, but is considered a popular ornamental shrub. Many varieties also grow in the bucket without any problems. But how poisonous are hostas actually?

Non-toxic - even edible
Planting hostas is completely harmless, because these perennials from the asparagus family are not poisonous. This applies to both humans and animals. Hostas are even edible - no wonder snails love to eat them…
Popular in Japanese cuisine
In Japanese cuisine, the flower buds of the hostas are valued and are considered a traditional dish. As a result, you can also eat the flowers (e.g. those of the 'greenhorn' variety, which is well suited for this purpose):
- candied
- pickled in vinegar or oil
- fried
- steamed as a vegetable
tips
You do not need to wear protective gloves when cutting the hostas. There are no irritating toxins here.
