Pansies belong to the genus of violets (lat. viola) and are characterized by a large variety of species. The most popular are the large-flowered garden pansy (Viola wittrockiana) and the horned violet (Viola cornuta) with their delicate flowers.

Pansies come in many beautiful colors and varieties

The variety of species and varieties of pansies is almost infinite. While the wild pansy species occur in nature in yellow, white and violet, the hobby gardener can design his balcony boxes and flower borders in soft pink, strong wine red, bright orange and many other color combinations.

Varieties of the large-flowered garden pansy

The universally popular garden pansy, which is now available in almost every imaginable color and shade, was created by crossing several species. i.a. were involved: wild pansy (Viola tricolor), yellow violet (Viola lutea), Altai pansy (Viola altaica). The Schweizer Riesen variety has particularly large flowers with velvety petals, the colors of which are eponymous:

  • Evening glow - deep dark or brown-red
  • Alpine lake - deep blue
  • Firnengold - golden yellow
  • Silver bride - white

Breeds such as Cats Orange, Jolly Joker or Fama Zitrin no longer have the black eye typical of pansies. The new breed Joker Poker Face surprises with its "funny face". Varieties with double and striped flowers are also available from seed dealers.

The horned violet is a perennial rock garden perennial that produces smaller, but all the more lush flowers. Some varieties grow overhanging, which makes them particularly suitable for arrangements in baskets, hanging baskets, etc. suit. The smaller flowers are also less sensitive to rain. In terms of colour, the dainty blossoms are in no way inferior to the large-flowered Viola:

  • Admire Orange Purple Win and Sorbet Sunny Royale in yellow-violet
  • Admiration and Admire Marina in light or dark blue
  • Admire Yellow and Sorbet Lemon Chiffon in yellow
  • Twix Black in an unusually dark midnight blue
  • Twix Orange in strong yellow-orange

You get u. edible varieties such as Tasty Mixed Fl Hybrid are offered. In principle, however, all pansies are suitable for consumption. They can be used in desserts and fruit salads.
